The Direct Aid Initiative is a project of Electronic Iraq intended to support Iraqis displaced as the result of the ongoing Iraqi crises through providing funds for crucial medical expenses.

Fatima is the youngest daughter of a family of Iraqis living as refugees in Jordan. She is very shy and hides behind her mother in the presence of strangers. Her mother says that Fatima thinks that doctors are going to cut her open again.

Due to a birth defect possibly related to contamination by munitions, Fatima lost one kidney when she was one year old, immediately following her arrival in Jordan. Her remaining kidney is prone to infection and because of this she requires monthly check-ups and out-patient treatment. In June of 2007, she was hospitalized for treatment of a severe kidney infection due to her family’s inability to pay for regular check-ups.

DAI will cover the expenses of check-ups, outpatient treatment, and medication for Fatima until her family is resettled. DAI team members maintain regular contact with Fatima's mother and her doctor to assess Fatima's ongoing medical needs.
